When James Troisi recently terminated his contract with Chinese side Liaoning Whowin, there was understandably plenty of interest in his services.
But when the Socceroo opted to return to Australia, there was only one destination on his mind – his former club Melbourne Victory.
Troisi has endured a frustrating time over the past couple of years in China and Saudi Arabia.
His stint in China was particularly challenging, which led to his decision to change the path of his football journey.
“It was difficult,” Troisi said. “Unfortunately, I got injured a couple of weeks into the season. I had to come back to Australia to get myself looked after.
“I went back and we agreed to mutually terminate the contract. It didn’t work out. That’s part and parcel of football. It was a good experience nevertheless.
“It’s been quite a long period where it hasn’t worked out the way I wanted it, and that’s football.”
For Troisi, returning to the club where he enjoyed almost everything about the 2013/14 season was an easy choice.
The 28-year-old signed a one-year deal at Victory, where he is a Golden Boot and Players’ Player of the Year award winner.
“I’ve been here before, I really enjoyed it and it’s a fantastic club,” he said.
“When I look back on my career, being here a couple of years back is the most I’ve enjoyed myself in a very long time.
“I was comfortable on and off the pitch. I guess when you’re enjoying yourself and getting physically looked after, you’ll play your best football.
“It’s fantastic to be back. I really can’t wait to show the fans what I can do again.”
Troisi will miss Victory’s Westfield FFA Cup Round of 32 match against Newcastle Jets on Wednesday night and is expected to begin training with the team next week.
