Melbourne Victory set to face English giants Manchester United

Melbourne Victory, along with Manchester United, the Victorian Government and Visit Victoria, TEG Sport and Left Field Live are pleased to announce the clash between the sides at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Friday 15 July at 8.10pm.

The friendly coincides with United’s 2022 Pre-Season Tour which will also see them face Crystal Palace at the same venue on Tuesday 19 July and will be United’s first trip back to Melbourne since facing the Socceroos in 1999.

Melbourne Victory Managing Director, Caroline Carnegie said that this is a great opportunity for the Club and the League.

“This will be Melbourne Victory’s biggest international friendly since our game against Liverpool FC, in July of 2013, which attracted over 95,000 to the MCG,” Carnegie said.

“We are excited to get the opportunity to test our squad against the Premier League giant and to do this in front of a passionate home crowd.”

Melbourne Victory Isuzu UTE A-League Men’s Head Coach, Tony Popovic said the clash will be a momentous occasion for the Club and his players.

“It’s a fantastic game to showcase a club like Manchester United in our country, it’s a great opportunity to showcase our Club, Melbourne Victory, to the world and a chance for our members and fans to see a special organisation and a club with such a big history,” Popovic said.

“It’s a great opportunity for our players to come up against the very best and see how they match up against them. You see what they can do every week on the TV and then when you come up against them on the pitch, you want to test yourself against it so it will inspire all of them to get to the level they want to.”

Melbourne Victory midfielder Jake Brimmer said the contest will be an invaluable experience for the playing group.

“It’s a massive opportunity, especially for the younger players to prove a point and hopefully get recognised,” Brimmer said.

“I was lucky enough to go to the Liverpool game in 2013 and it was a great atmosphere. Playing in front of almost 100 thousand people is a dream for any kid so I can’t wait for that.”

Manchester United Chief Operating Officer, Collette Roche, said:

“It has been two years since the club has been able to travel on an international pre-season tour, so we can’t wait to get going and reconnect with our fans in Australasia,” Roche said.

“Our matches in Melbourne will be a wonderful opportunity for international fans to see their favourite players up-close in an exciting schedule of games.”
