Morrison credits squad mentality

Kayla Morrison

Melbourne Victory defender, Kayla Morrison, has hailed the squad’s positive mentality ahead of this Sunday’s Westfield W-League Grand Final against Sydney FC.

Victory secured a place in the Championship-decider with an impressive 6-2 Semi-Final win over Brisbane Roar, in which Morrison made her 13th appearance of the season.

W-League Finals

“When the final whistle blew there was relief,” said the centre-back.

A Melina Ayres hat-trick, Lisa De Vanna double and a Catherine Zimmerman strike sealed a memorable win for Victory on Sunday at Lions FC Stadium.

“I didn’t feel instant happiness and needed a good 30 minutes to calm down. After that we were on the team bus and it just felt good, we were happy and moving onto the next one.

“We can’t be too happy because we want to win the Grand Final,” she said.

Teammates

Morrison has played every minute of Victory’s Westfield W-League campaign so far and has been instrumental at the back, playing her part in seven clean sheets.

“I’d put my performances down to the people around me,” said the American.

“I instantly felt comfortable when I came into this team, everyone is so kind and uplifting.

“They give me positive feedback and if I do something wrong, they’re right there to tell me but they’ll also tell me how to fix it and grow,” Morrison said.

Back home

While being supported by her Victory teammates, Morrison’s number one fans will be following this Sunday’s Grand Final from California in the United States.

“My parents are die-hard fans,” said Morrison.

“My dad tries to stay awake and watch the games even though they’re at 2am.

“For the Grand Final even if they wanted to, I don’t think they could sleep knowing the game is on and we could be winning that Championship.”
