Melbourne Victory defender Daniel Mullen says it is important his team picks up all three points against Wellington Phoenix on Sunday.
Victory head into the match one point clear of Adelaide United in third place on the A-League table, but can drop to fourth if they fail to beat the Phoenix and the Reds win their game in Perth.
After their game in New Zealand, Victory will host a final at Etihad Stadium on April 5 and Mullen believes the club needs to enter that cut-throat clash in winning form.
“We are in third place now and it’s up to us to lose it so we want to go out and get the three points to make sure that doesn’t happen,” Mullen said.
“Coming into finals we want to have, not just a win, but a nice game where we dictate and do the things we want to do.
“If we can keep a clean sheet, if we can get some goals then that’s going to important coming into finals.”
Victory enter the Phoenix match having lost 3-2 to Perth at home last week and Mullen said the players are keen to atone for that poor performance.
“To put in a performance like that was, as the coach said, was disrespectful to them and to the club, so we’re going to try and rectify that this week obviously,” he said.
“It wasn’t good enough, it wasn’t good enough for the fans that come out and support us week in, week out.
“We’re still working hard at training and in games trying to execute our plan, the way that we want to play.
“In the last few weeks, okay some games it hasn’t come off, but we’re looking forward to this game and we’re just going to go out and do the same things.”
