NPL wrap: Victory beaten by South Melbourne

Three second-half goals were enough for South Melbourne to overcome Melbourne Victory 4-1 in the Playstation 4 NPL Victoria at AAMI Park on Sunday afternoon.

South Melbourne enjoyed the lion’s share of the possession early on and made it count four minutes in when Milos Lujic’s well-placed header found the net.

Victory weathered the storm and equalised barely 10 minutes later after John Maclean guided Michael Holden’s pinpoint cross home at the front post.

The visitors continued to muster a handful of half-chances throughout the duration of the first half, but Victory withstood their attempts with aplomb.

Victory’s resistance continued after the interval, when it put together a couple of chances of its own. Holden’s fizzing shot was followed up by Anthony Duzel, who could not keep his effort below the crossbar.

But South was unforgiving at the other end, having Leigh Minopoulos to thank for blasting home his side’s second goal in the 72nd minute.

Manolo Herrero’s altertness saw him make the most of a loose ball to add South’s third, before Milos Lujic rounded off the day with a late goal from the penalty spot.

Victory travels to Sunshine for its next PS4 NPL Victoria match against Melbourne Knights on Sunday, July 31.

The under-20 match between Victory and South has been postponed until further notice.
