Post-Match Reaction | Tony Popovic on Sydney FC win

From Head Coach Tony Popovic after Victory’s 3-0 win against Sydney FC.

On the performance…

“There are always areas we can do better of course.”

“To put on a fantastic performance and get a reward with three goals.”

“We haven’t kept a clean sheet since round one (too).”

“Second half I though we saw it out quite well.”

On the recent improvement in results…

“I think [the team] have been going about their business for all of the games and doing well.”

“We feel we’re still growing.”

“Very good crowd obviously helps us here at home.”

“I thought we looked very dangerous throughout the night.”

On Daniel Arzani’s goal…

“Great moment.”

“Everyone is so happy for Daniel.”

“He’s had a great pre-season and it’s starting to really show.”

“He’s an attacker so he needs to assist, he needs to score. It was really good to see him do that.”

“I’m happy he got some reward tonight.”

On Zinedine Machach’s performance…

“Zizou had a very good game.”

“He was good against Wanderers (too).”

“Today he continued on, scored a wonderful goal.”

“But also great composure, great technique to set up Bruno for his goal as well.”

On Ben Folami…

“We can’t forget Ben Folami also.”

“He missed the last eight weeks of pre-season.”

“The boy has worked extremely hard to get to this point where he can put in that type of effort.”

“I’m very happy for him.”

On Bruno Fornaroli’s Socceroos ambitions…

“I’m glad you’re asking me regularly (about this).”

“It shows that a player deserves to be in that conversation.”

“You can see tonight, we’re playing a very good team, he held the ball up so well, he looked sharp, he was moving away from defenders.”

“Just delighted for him. I want it to continue.”

“He has to be in the conversation (for Socceroos selection) because he’s scoring goals.”

“He was chosen 18 months ago or a year ago…age wasn’t an issue then, and he’s playing better now.”

On the potential need to cover for Fornaroli’s absence…

“You can never just replace a Bruno Fornaroli.”

“But we’ve been working on Bruno playing, not playing, as we have with all of the other players.”

“If he’s not here, we’ll all be very proud of him.”

“If not, he’ll continue what he’s doing.”

On the steps taken to improve from last season…

“I believe everything plays a part. All the small details add up.”

“We decided two or three weeks before [last] season finished that we’d do a training block.”

“It was to start cementing a playing style that we will play as soon as we get back on day one.”

“The players worked hard. We tried to bring that comradery.”

“We feel that every part of the process has got us to a point that we’re playing well.”

On Nishan Velupillay’s minor injury…

“We anticipate him to be fit and available for next week’s game.”

On the impact of the fans…

“We’re very grateful that we have this fanbase.”

“That they stuck with the club through the good and the bad times.”

“We wanted to make our fans and members excited when they watch us play from round one.”

“To hear that noise, to see them there supporting the players is great. We’ve got to keep performing and hopefully we get more and more numbers to the stadium.”
