VPL Coaches Notes: Victory held by Redbacks

Melbourne Victory had to settle for a point from a topsy-turvy VPL encounter against Eltham Redbacks.

The Boys in Blue impressively overhauled a two-goal interval deficit in the Friday night clash at Eltham North Reserve, only to be pegged back themselves as the spoils were ultimately shared.

First-half efforts from Josh Dennett and Dylan Bresolin had the hosts well set until Victory came steaming into contention.

Half-time introduction Oliver Dragicevic pulled one back before Malik Olukhale equalised and Alex Lee fired the away team into the lead.

But this could not be held, and three minutes later, Billy Romas levelled matters to split the points.

Speaking to MelbourneVictory.com.au, Senior Academy Head Coach, Besart Berisha, was proud to see his team extend their unbeaten run to three matches.

“It was a game that showed our character and mentality. We did not start the way we wanted and went into half-time two-nil down, but the response from the boys in the second half was outstanding. We came out with a completely different mentality, played our football, controlled the game and turned it around to lead.

“I also felt we should have been rewarded with a clear penalty in an important moment of the match, but despite that, the team kept fighting until the end. Conceding the equaliser late felt disappointing, but overall, this point could be a very important one for us moving forward.

“I am proud of the character, belief and resilience the boys showed.”
