Weekend Reflection: Hopkins looks back on Wellington draw

Head coach Jeff Hopkins shared his thoughts following today’s draw against Wellington Phoenix to close out the regular season.

On the result…

“Still can’t believe it at the moment.”

“What’s happened has happened. Extremely disappointing for everybody.”

“But I guess the one thing is we’re still in there with a shout. Waiting on another result tomorrow. We’ll be hoping against hope that City can do us a favour, which is an unusual thing.”

On the performance…

“I thought we started the game very well.”

“We came here with a good attitude. We were in good spirits as well.”

“Maybe the pressure of the game got to us a little bit.”

“We stopped doing what we did so well in the first half. We probably played a bit too direct and started to turn the ball over a bit too much.”

“On the whole really disappointed with the whole day.”

On Melina Ayres’ strong finish to the season…

“We spoke before the game about getting the ball to our key players. I thought we did that really well in the first half.”

“We missed Mel earlier on in the season when she was out injured.”

“Since she’s come back I think she’s scored in just about every game.”

“The quality of her goal just sums her up. She’s always looking for those half-chances.”

“I was really pleased with Mel’s performance today and her effort.”
