Williams in the mix to face Phoenix

Rhys Williams is in the mix to play in Melbourne Victory’s Round 9 clash with Wellington Phoenix on Sunday.

The defender, who was forced off the ground early in Victory’s loss to Newcastle on November 23, has travelled with the squad to New Zealand, as did Lawrence Thomas, who left training early on Wednesday after jarring a finger.

Speaking at Melbourne Airport on Friday morning, Head Coach Kevin Muscat revealed he was “optimistic” Williams would feature against the Phoenix.

“If there was any doubt, he wouldn’t have travelled but he’s done everything asked of him,” Muscat said.

“If that’s the case, it’s a bit difficult for me to sit here and err on the side of caution when he’s trained and done everything asked of him.

“We’re optimistic that he’ll be fine.”

Williams joined Victory from Perth Glory during the off-season and immediately made his mark in the centre of defence.

He has been one of Melbourne’s stand-out performers in the early stages of the season, a fact not lost on Muscat.

“It [Williams’ injury] obviously illustrated how important he is to us.

“He’s worked very hard since that game, he’s done everything possible, he wants to be out there.

“We’ve still got to make a final decision but from my point-of-view, at this point in time he’s available”
