Williams: We have to build on Adelaide win

Ahead of Friday’s Melbourne Derby, Melbourne Victory’s Rhys Williams has stressed the importance of building on last Saturday’s win against Adelaide.

Victory heads into the clash at AAMI Park four points behind third-placed City with six games to play before finals.

It leap-frogged Adelaide into fourth place with a 3-0 win at AAMI Park in Round 21 last weekend.

“A few weeks ago, we spoke about catching Adelaide and what a chance we had,” Williams said.

“We caught Adelaide and next on the list is City.”

Round 22 of the Hyundai A-league will be the third meeting between Victory and City this season and has been labelled ‘the decider’, with both sides claiming a win each so far.

“Bragging rights are always nice for the fans and we’re trying to take three points,” stated Williams.

While the Adelaide result was a step in the right direction, Williams knows it won’t count for much if the result doesn’t go Victory’s way on Friday.

“After the travelling and our run of form, it was key to put in a good performance and come away with the points, but it will mean nothing if we don’t back it up this weekend,” said Williams.

City triumphed in the first meeting this season, defeating Victory men 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium.

Victory, however, bounced back with a 1-0 win in Round 12, thanks a stoppage time winner from Mark Milligan.
