Y-League wrap: Victory overcomes Adelaide

A stoppage-time penalty from Pierce Waring saw Melbourne Victory edge Adelaide United 1-0 in the Foxtel Y-League on Friday.

The hosts squandered a host of chances at Etihad Stadium before Waring converted from the spot in the 92nd minute.

Victory head coach Gareth Naven was pleased for his team after its first win of the campaign.

“I’m happy for the players definitely. It’s important for them to get success,” he said.

“If you train hard, work hard, I’m really happy for them as a group of players so it’s good.”

He added: “I don’t think there was a standout player which I think showed that collectively everyone was working for each other and if you can get that right I think everything else follows.”

Victory had the better moments in the first half, with Waring and Christian Theoharous both threatening early.

Waring continually got himself into good positions, forcing a diving save from Isaac Richards in the 34th minute.

Josh Hope and Nicholas Sette were also lively for Victory, while goalkeeper Matthew Sutton made two good low saves.

Hope squandered two glorious chances after the break, shooting straight at Richards and later blazing over from inside the area.

But Victory deservedly broke through in additional time, Waring placing a spot-kick into the bottom corner after substitute Joshua Kelic was fouled in the area.
