Davidson set to represent A-League against Barcelona

Melbourne Victory defender Jason Davidson is set to represent the A-League All Stars against Spanish giants Barcelona on Wednesday night at Accor Stadium in Sydney.

The 30-year-old Melburnian has joined the team’s preparations in Sydney as part of the final 21-man squad, led by Manchester United legend and new Macarthur coach Dwight Yorke.

Injury has forced fellow Victory stars Jake Brimmer and Roderick Miranda out of the clash, leaving Davidson as Victory’s sole representative.

A stellar debut season at the Club saw Davidson quickly become a fan favourite in his home town and earn an All-Star nod.

Barcelona has flown out a talented squad, including captain Sergio Busquets, Dani Alves, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Frankie de Jong, Memphis Depay, teenage sensation Ansu Fati and goalkeeper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen.

Veteran defender Gerard Pique has not travelled with the group, while Ferran Torres cannot enter Australia as he has not “completed the required vaccination programme”, according to Barcelona.

Despite the short time on Australian soil and limited build-up in the A-League Men Grand Final week, the Australian Professional Leagues (APL) say they have sold over 60,000 tickets.

The contest is the first All Stars game since 2014 after the league’s best lost 3-2 to Juventus.

The game kicks off at at 8.05pm on channel 10Bold.
