Top 5: Melbourne Derbies at AAMI Park

Ahead of this weekend’s huge Melbourne Derby, it’s time to take a look back at some of the best clashes between Victory and City at AAMI Park.

5) 2021/22 Round 5:

Victory 2-2 City

The first derby of last season was a bona fide classic. An enthralling end-to-end contest which signalled Victory’s return to the upper echelon of the A-League Men’s competition, the game will live long in the memories of Victory fans thanks to Nick D’Agostino’s remarkable late equaliser.

4) 2017/18 Round 12:

Victory 1-0 City

How better to win a derby than with a goal at the death? That’s exactly what happened in 2017, when Victory were fouled in the box in the final minute. Mark Milligan oozed class as he stepped up and nailed the spot-kick with what was effectively the last touch of the game, securing a dramatic win for Kevin Muscat’s side.

3) 2016/17 Round 11:

Victory 2-1 City

Heading into the game, City were just one point ahead of Victory in what was a monumental 2nd v 3rd clash. Tim Cahill gave City an early lead, before Victory produced a brilliant comeback thanks to goals from Marco Rojas and Besart Berisha. The goal from Berisha came deep into the second half, securing a win led by two of the Club’s greatest ever goal-scorers.

2) 2021/22 Round 23:

Victory 3-0 City

The most recent meeting between the sides saw Victory secure their biggest ever derby win at AAMI Park. The game will be remembered as a Marco Rojas masterclass, with the Kiwi scoring two sensational first-half goals to help guide Victory to a commanding win.

1) 2012/13 Round 12:

Victory 2-1 Heart

The most famous moment in Melbourne Derby history came back in 2012, when Archie Thompson’s last-gasp winner gave Victory fans a moment they will never forget. The assist from Marco Rojas, Thompson’s chip finish over the goalkeeper, the bounce in off the crossbar – the stuff of Victory legend.
