A 10-man Melbourne Victory suffered a 4-1 loss to the Newcastle Jets in the Hyundai A-League on Thursday night.
Kosta Barbarouses gave Victory an early lead with a spectacular goal at McDonald Jones Stadium.
But Daniel Georgievski and Andrew Nabbout scored either side of a red card to Victory midfielder Mark Milligan.
Joe Champness and Nabbout – with his second – sealed Newcastle’s win in the second half.
Victory made just one change to the starting XI that comfortably beat Perth Glory as Barbarouses – back from international duty – replaced Jai Ingham on the right wing.
It was Barbarouses who opened the scoring in spectacular fashion in the fifth minute.
James Troisi released the New Zealand international, who stunningly volleyed past Glen Moss from 20 yards to make it 1-0.
However, the lead lasted just eight minutes before the Jets levelled, Georgievski firing into the top corner from inside the area.
The thrilling start to the clash continued as Victory goalkeeper Lawrence Thomas dived to his left to tip over an Ivan Vujica strike from 25 yards.
In a huge blow, Victory star Rhys Williams came off injured midway through the first half before the visitors were reduced to 10 men after Milligan retaliated to a Georgievski tackle.
The Jets went ahead eight minutes before half-time with Nabbout tapping in a Jason Hoffman cross from the right.
Thomas was forced into a low save to deny Dimitri Petratos prior to the break, before a relatively scrappy start to the second half.
Neither team was able to create much of note until Champness sealed the Jets’ win after a throw-in.
Leigh Broxham produced a fine block to deny Champness a second before Petratos rattled Thomas’ crossbar from distance and Nabbout tapped in Newcastle’s fourth.
Victory is away again in Round 9, making the trip to Wellington to face the Phoenix on Sunday, December 3.
