Kyra Cooney-Cross scored her first Westfield W-League goal but Melbourne Victory suffered a 3-1 loss to the Newcastle Jets on Friday.

Cooney-Cross, 15, headed in a first-half equaliser for Victory after Tori Huster had put the Jets in front at AAMI Park.

However, Katie Stengel struck from the penalty spot and Hannah Brewer scored in the second half to see Newcastle to its win.

The Jets made a fast start and took a fifth-minute lead, Huster volleying in from inside the area.

Victory slowly settled into the clash and levelled just before the half-hour mark, with Lia Privitelli having earlier skimmed the crossbar with a 25-yard effort.

Cooney-Cross got on the end of a Privitelli cross from the right to draw Victory level with her first Westfield W-League goal.

However, Stengel restored Newcastle’s lead, converting from the penalty spot despite Casey Dumont getting a hand on the effort.

Victory looked the more likely throughout the second half but was punished at the other end, Brewer finishing smartly after a one-two with Stengel inside the area.

Victory returns to action with a trip to Brisbane Roar on Friday, January 5.
