Scholarship player profile: Zaydan Bello

Position: Defender

Age: 20

Joined Victory: 2018

Youth teams: Green Gully, Sporting Whittlesea

20-year-old Bello is a versatile defender who currently plies his trade at right-back.

Victory’s NPL captain, who has developed in the Club’s academy since the age of 15, plays the game with a positive mindset.

“I’m a forward-thinking player. I like to move forward as much as I can,” Bello said.

YOUTH CAREER / JOINING VICTORY

Bello starred at Green Gully and Sporting Whittlesea as a central midfielder in his youth career before being spotted in 2018.

“I was spotted by Paulo Cardosa at the U15 Australian trials in Victoria and joined the Club from there,” Bello said.

“I played central midfield in my youth until I joined Victory and started to play at right-back.”

VICTORY CAREER

Bello made his A-League Men debut in February 2021 against Wellington Phoenix and has been a standout in the Club’s NPL program.

The 20-year-old also made an impact in the Club’s recent run to FFA Cup glory, playing a crucial role in defence early in the campaign.

His impressive form saw Academy coach Joe Palatsides hand him NPL captaincy duties for season 2022.

“Joe handed it to me in one of the practice games and it just went from there,” Bello said.

“It’s different for me but I’ve enjoyed it so far.”

ASPIRATIONS

Bello has appeared in the top flight on various occasions over the past two seasons but is keen to establish himself in the senior squad in the year ahead.

“I’d love to play more and get more minutes in the league,” Bello said.

“I want to develop and try to contribute as much as I can.”
